The Johnford SDMC-7000 x 5000 five face machining center features a vertical and horizontal spindle in the same head for 5 sided machining of large parts. It is the heaviest double column machining center in its class. With standard accessories, this heavy duty 35 HP traveling double column vertical machining center, weighs in at over 177,000 lbs. of Meehanite cast iron. The machine design features a moving column and fixed table for unlimited table loads. A rugged 90 degree bridge with offset Y axis ways and a massive 48” wide saddle keeps the spindle center line extremely close to the bridge for rigidity. This design also gives a full 48” across the Y axis ways for best support of the massive headstock. The large headstock provides 42” of Z axis stroke and excellent rigidity.
Our five face head features a full 360 degree rotation ability with minimum increments of 5 degrees. The head, which is automatically attached and detached, is stored in its own cradle located outside the machining area, near the operator station. The head is locked in position by a face gear coupling for rigidity and accuracy. A 4 position automatic attachment changer is available as an option to hold different heads. The ATC system works with both the vertical and horizontal spindles for truly automatic operation. Both CAT-50 spindles are driven by a 35HP (50HP opt.) Fanuc high torque spindle motor and 2 speed ZF gear box that delivers outstanding cutting performance at any RPM. The vertical 6000 RPM spindle is oil cooled for stability and long life.
The massive bridge and traveling head feature square box ways coated with Turcite and have been designed with diagonally arranged ribs that will help reduce the amount of distortion that is caused by years of continued service. The column traverse is accomplished via 2 sets of heavy duty Schneeberger linear ways under each column and twin 3.15” diameter ballscrews. The X ballscrews are fixed and the ball nuts are spun by powerful servo motors to eliminate whip and vibration. The CNC synchronizes the servo motors to eliminate the crabbing effect. Twin linear scales are standard on the X axis to enhance positioning accuracy.
An impressive list of standard features includes a heavy duty 40 tool arm type ATC that is separated from the machine for easy maintenance, a complete chip removal system consisting of 2 screw type conveyors on each side of table empty into a lift up type conveyor at the end to discharge into a hopper, a high volume coolant system, and basic guarding around the machine to contain chips and coolant.
The Fanuc OiM-F Plus controls is standard for overall ease of use in most general purpose most high speed machining applications. The Fanuc 31iM-B Plus control is optional. The 31iM-B Plus is a high speed CNC system that is the best suited for high speed machining of three dimensional surfaces. It can be equipped with a variety of high speed machining options for optimum performance in demanding applications.
