Description

The Johnford SV-48 is a Super Vertical that combines speed, rigidity and precision in a heavy-duty Vertical Machining Center. This machine has features not found on competitive machines at any price. It features square box ways on all axes with large diameter pre-tensioned ballscrews, and a large diameter rigid spindle for heavy cutting. The Y axis features 4 box ways for unparalleld support and accuracy. The Z axis is hydraulically counterbalanced for increased speed and smooth operation. Special Turcite and hand scraping allow the SV-48 to rapid at 944 IPM in all axes. As in any high-quality machine tool, the SV-48 is made from heavy Meehanite FC-30 castings. Cast iron has the strength and vibration dampening characteristics necessary for excellent surface finishes and long cutting tool life.

A standard 24 tool high speed arm type automatic tool changer provides fast 1.3 second tool changes for maximum productivity. The 70mm (2.75”) spindle shaft has 7 bearings for unparalleled stiffness and cutting stability. The standard class 7 steel bearings allow standard spindle speeds up to 10,000 RPM. With the use of the optional IDD spindle, speeds can run up to 15,000 RPM. 18,000 or 24,000 RPM Weiss integral spindles with HSK-63A tooling are available for ultra high-speed machining. For applications requiring high torque at low RPM, a standard 2 speed geared head gives full power at only 455 RPM. The twin rear discharge screw type chip conveyor and high-volume flush system efficiently handles chips and minimizes cleaning time.

The 40mm (1.57”) diameter ballscrews are class 3 with a double nut pre-loaded design. To eliminate thermal growth and promote high accuracy and high-speed positioning, the ballscrews are pre-tensioned. High torque servo motors are direct coupled to the ballscrews for accuracy.
