SHIMADA is the Japanese leader in multi-spindle bar and chucker type CNC lathes. Purchased from KITAKO, a division of Kitagawa Iron Works in 2011, the HS-4200 is the only machine of its kind in the world. Refined by SHIMADA, the unique HS-4200 is the only machine with 4 spindles with 2 outside the work zone for load / unload and 2 spindles inside the work zone for turning operations that allow for almost ZERO part load / unload time. In roughly the footprint of a single spindle turning center, Shimada technology combines the three factors essential to just-in-time manufacturing success; the unparalleled performance of a twin spindle chucker, the precision and quick set-up time of a CNC, and unattended productivity with the addition of optional automation. The Shimada HS-4200 provides a superb machine platform for the quick production of a wide range of high-volume parts with exacting accuracies and requiring minimal set-up times. Shimada brings over 60 years of chucker type late building experience and the know-how and expertise obtained with the successful installation of over 4,000 multi-spindle machines. The HS-4200 offers an affordable and more productive option to twin spindle machines with spindles that sit idle during load and unload.
The 4 spindles are mounted in a high speed indexing spindle carrier. Carrier index time is only 1.5 seconds which is as close to zero load / unload time as physically possible. Divided by 2 parts per index, the load / unload time per part becomes .75 seconds! The spindle carrier features a large diameter curvic coupling ensuring high accuracy, rigidity, and repeatability when indexing. The main spindles are hardened, precision ground, and supported by precision double row cylindrical roller bearings and angular contact bearings. The cartridge type spindle are grease lubricated and sealed for minimal maintenance and long service life. The HS-4200 features very robust spindles. The 90mm (3.54”) spindle bearing I.D. is largest in its class and sufficiently robust to support heavy cutting. The spindles have a max speed of 4500 RPM (3000 RPM and 5000 RPM optional) and are driven by a pair of 20HP (25HP optional) servo spindle motors. Each working spindle has its own spindle motor.
The HS-4200 features rigid, precision ground box slideways in all axes. Box ways ensure high accuracy, exceptional cutting tool life, and long service life. Each mating surface is coated with a special synthetic resin that is hand scraped for precise fitment and accuracy. The ballscrew bearing blocks are also hand scraped for exact alignment. The ballscrews are pretension to eliminate thermal expansion. Rapid traverse has been increased to reduce cycle times. High speed rapid rates are 945”/min in X and 1181”/min in Z.
The HS-4200 is equipped with (2) 8 station drum turrets or optional 10 station live milling turrets. The turrets feature a revolutionary 3 piece curvic coupling design for both high speed indexing and superior rigidity. The 8 station turrets are configured so that both OD and ID tooling can be mounted at any position. The optional 10 station live milling turrets can have up to 5 live tools in each turret
While hand loading is standard, the HS-4200 is standard as automation ready. Even a standard machine already in service can be upgraded with automation. Various optional automation configurations are available to further maximize the machine’s efficiency. These options can include a gantry loader, single or dual robots, workpiece flip stations, work stockers, bowl feeders, in-chute, workpiece push-in unit and so on.
